About This Project

This WEBook was authored with a clear goal: to make the acoustical science behind the Duff Clearing Process for timpani (particularly the concept of doubly degenerate modes) accessible, accurate, and meaningful to musicians, students, and educators.

While the pedagogical framework and tuning philosophy originate with Cloyd Duff, this book expands upon those principles by connecting them to the physics of vibrating circular membranes. The structure, research, musical analogies, and explanatory development are the author’s own. To support clarity and technical precision, especially when translating complex scientific ideas into plain, performable language, the author made intentional use of AI as an editorial collaborator.

Specifically, this project benefited from the assistance of:

Physics Theory Exploration and Critique Bot

a customized version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT (GPT-4–GPT-5.2)

This assistant was used not to generate original ideas, but to:

  • Help rephrase dense scientific content into clear, accessible language

  • Suggest analogies and explanations suited to a musical audience

  • Organize and refine definitions, glossaries, and section flow

  • Confirm physics-based claims for conceptual accuracy

  • Format citations and references with consistency

All AI-assisted content was critically reviewed, edited, and shaped by the author to preserve voice, intent, and musical relevance.

On the Use of AI in Creative and Scholarly Work

AI tools can be powerful collaborators, not as authors, but as editors, translators, and technical aides. Responsible use of AI involves critical engagement, transparency, and authorship integrity.

This page is included to acknowledge that process clearly and respectfully.
